In plain English
How hosted receipt pages and QR-code receipts work, what can expire, and how to verify a receipt link before relying on it.
Key points
Point 1
Hosted receipt links point to a web record rather than embedding the whole receipt.
Point 2
QR codes make receipt retrieval convenient but still require domain and transaction checks.
Point 3
Important records should be saved in a durable format instead of relying on a permanent link.
A digital receipt does not have to be delivered as a complete email or file. Many systems instead create a receipt page on a merchant or service-provider website and send the customer a link. The link may arrive by text message, email, app notification or QR code shown at checkout.
What a hosted receipt page is
A hosted receipt page is a web page generated from the merchant’s transaction record. The customer opens a unique address to view the receipt. The page may include purchase details, return links, loyalty information, downloadable files or customer-service options.
How QR-code receipts work
At checkout, the POS system can generate a QR code that points to a hosted page or begins a short receipt-claim process. Scanning the code does not usually place a complete receipt inside the camera app; it opens a web address or merchant application.
Why merchants use links
- SMS messages have limited space.
- Hosted pages can be updated after returns or adjustments.
- The merchant can present consistent branding and support links.
- A web page can offer a PDF or wallet-style pass.
Where the risks appear
Hosted links can expire, change ownership, require an account or expose browsing data to analytics services. QR codes can also be replaced or imitated. A polished page is not proof that the underlying transaction is genuine.
How to verify and preserve a hosted receipt
- Check that the domain belongs to the merchant or a disclosed provider.
- Compare the amount and time with your payment activity.
- Use the merchant’s official app or typed web address for unexpected messages.
- Download or print-to-PDF important receipts before the link expires.
Practical checks
- Inspect the full destination domain before signing in.
- Compare transaction details with your payment account.
- Download important receipts while the link still works.
